Q.: Do I need any shots?
A: It is not required for you to have any shots, but it may be in your best interest to get a tetanus shot.
Q: Do I need a passport?
A: You have to have a passport to attend the trip!
Q: Where will we be staying?
A: We will be staying at the Moorlands in Mandeville, Jamaica. It is a Christian Camp owned by Americans. It is a very safe camp and there are security officers on duty every night. In Mexico you will be staying at a hotel that is safe and comfortable.
Q: Is it safe in Mandeville and Playa del Carmen?
A: Mandeville is a little town located in the interior of the island. We will never be in a situation were you will be in any harm. Always keep in mind that you are in another country, but we will so our best to always maintain your safety. Playa del Carmen is right outside of Cancun and has not had the recent violence as others area have. You will be safe and taken care of.
Q: How much money will I need when I am there?
A: All meals at the camp are included in the $1000. There may be days that we go to McDonalds and you will be responsible for that and also for your meals on day trips (Lunch and Dinner). Also if you want to buy any souvenirs. Usually bringing $100 will be enough.
Q: How hard is the work going to be?
A: We will be working 6-7 hours per day at several different locations. It will be hot every day that we are there and there will be labor involved.
Q: Can I catch any sort of diseases when I am there?
A: The water that we drink at the camp is fine, you will not want to drink the water at the orphanage. You will be able to bring water with you. The kids do not have any life threatening diseases, but you should always be careful. Always wash your hands!
Q: Will we be able to drink or smoke while we are there?
A: Keep in mind that this is a service trip and you are there representing the YMCA. Drinking and smoking will not be allowed under any circumstances. If this is going to be a problem for you, please contact Amanda Moore for further discussion.
Q: Can my parents contact me?
A: There will be a phone were we are and emergency numbers. However it is hard to call out and has been a problem in the past. Make for sure you have calling cards. Some cell phones may work and some will not. If you really need a phone when you are there, you may want to change you cell phone plan to reach.
Q: Will we have tools to fundraise with?
A: We will provide you with a sample letter, video and pictures that you can send out to your family, friends and business. We will also have several fundraisers throughout the year. Please do not let the price of the trip stop you from going. We will help you in any way that we can.
Q: What do we do at night?
A: We will always meet at night as a group to go over the day and talk about the next day and have a time to reflect. After that, the night is yours. Bring games, cards and anything you want to entertain yourself!
