November 18, 2016 to November 23, 2016
BACKGROUND:
The state of Louisiana continues to deal with a significant level of flooding and one of the worst natural disasters in recent years. At least 13 have died, thousands have been forced from their homes into shelters, and an estimated 40,000 homes have been destroyed. President Obama has declared major disaster across the state of Louisiana in 20 parishes. We will be working in Denham Springs, which is located in the Livingston Parish, where 90% of houses and businesses were badly damaged or destroyed. High-water levels averaged from 2-4 feet. MISSION: Our goal is to provide support for the All Hands project, which is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to empowering disaster relief volunteers all around the world. SCHEDULE: We will be leaving Indianapolis on Friday, November 18th and returning Wednesday, November 23rd in time to celebrate Thanksgiving the following day. We will be renting vans and driving to Baton Rouge, which helps cut our overall cost down for this trip. Below is a rough itinerary of the trip. You will receive a detailed itinerary along with more trip information during our pre-trip meeting (more information on meeting date/time TBA).
ACCOMODATIONS: We will be staying at the All Hands Base (New Covenant Baptist Church) located at 215 Florida Ave. SE, Denham Springs, Louisiana 70726. All Meals will be provided, however, if you have food allergies please make the leader aware so we can work on additional accommodations. Bedding IS NOT PROVIDED so students will need to bring a sleeping bag, air mattress, or cot of sorts along with sheets as we will be sleeping on the floor. Space will be tight so it is important that everyone packs light. There will be shower trailers available on base as well for after we return to base in the afternoon. COST: The cost is $500 per person and that covers: travel, room and board, most meals and supplies for projects. A deposit of $100 is due by October 21st and the final payment will be due by November 11th. You will also need to provide your own meals on our free day in the city, which will be on Monday. More information will be included in your trip packet. |
