March 3rd to the 9th, 2017
HISTORY OF THE TRIP
Since 2002, the Intercollegiate YMCA has been traveling to Mandeville, Jamaica to serve the people of Jamaica and the children at the Hanbury Home. The trip was created to provide students an opportunity to take part in a unique spring break experience that would give them the opportunity to serve and take part in an experience that would not only impact those served but the students attending. We have developed close relationships with many individuals in Jamaica which makes our travel safe and comfortable while we are there. Since our first trip we have taken over 650 students and served over 1,200 individuals in Jamaica.
During this trip, you will work with the Hanbury Home in Jamaica. The Hanbury Home is a children’s home sponsored by the Salvation Army. According to the Salvation Army Web site, it houses with approximately 80 children and 20 staff members. Our mission is to help the home in any way we can, so we will perform various projects for the home depending on their current need. We will have some time to interact and play with the kids, so prepare to meet some pretty amazing people!
FOOD + LODGING
We will be staying at the Moorlands Camp in Mandeville. The facility is a non-denominational, non-profit Christian camp owned by Americans. The camp is safe and has security at night. For information on the facility and the history of the camp, please visit their Web site, http://moorlandscamp.com/.
All food is covered in the registration costs, so you do not need to worry about purchasing food during the trip. However, there will be days where we go to restaurants and are out on day trips, so you will need money for this, as well as any souvenirs you plan to buy. Usually $100 is enough to cover these additional expenses. Bottled water will be provided. The food at camp is traditional camp food. If you have any food restrictions or allergies, please make sure you let Amanda Moore know.
SERVICE WORK
There are a wide variety of things we could do during our work days in Jamaica prepare to work hard and get dirty. Past projects have included gardening, painting and building, for example. Prepare for working outdoors in the hot weather some days or all days. If you have any work concerns or limitations, please discuss them with the trip leader before the trip to ensure accommodations.
Memories, Anecdotes, Pictures
My time on this trip was life-changing. After transferring schools and having to start over, I applied for this trip on a whim. The YMCA worked with me so that finances wouldn't be and issue, and before I knew it I had landed on the most beautiful piece of land on this planet. Though impoverished in places, I met some of the sweetest kids with the biggest hearts and ended up in tears leaving the orphanage on our last day. I met so many new friends, discovered more of who I am, and realized how I can make a difference here at home. Now a Campus Y officer, I plan to return to this place every chance I can. I would even like to lead my own trip someday for this amazing organization.
