HISTORY OF THE TRIP
This will be the fifth year students have traveled with the Intercollegiate YMCA to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Over 20 students have volunteered their spring breaks over the years to help construct a school and church building in the popular tourist town. MISSION For the past 5 years the Intercollegiate YMCA has assisted local residents in the town of Playa del Carmen Mexico build a multi-functional church that will also serve as a primary school and local community center. This project is 100% sponsored by the Intercollegiate YMCA. The residents of this community do not have the resources to complete this project on their own, and there is no community space for youth or families in the area. Though it is satisfying for volunteers to see the physical impact they have on the community by building this safe space, the deeper impact is seen by the families and community members that visit the team on a constant basis, giving thanks for the time and effort of each participant. |
LODGING + FOOD
Volunteers stay at a small open air hotel called “Hotel Maranatha” (translation Hotel of the Messiah). Volunteers stay in rooms of 2-3. All rooms have air conditioning and their own bathroom, and the hotel even has a pool on site! Meals are served by the hotel food service, and are always a BIG hit with volunteers, featuring all sorts of local favorites such as guacamole, taquitos, carne asada and more! Hotel Maranatha is located in the heart of the tourist district, and is minutes away from local shopping and the beach! All food is covered in the registration costs, so you do not need to worry about purchasing food during the trip. However, there will be days where we go to restaurants and are out on day trips, so you will need money for this, as well as any souvenirs you plan to buy. Usually $100 is enough to cover these additional expenses. Bottled water will be provided. |
SERVICE WORK
We will be building, so get ready to work hard and get dirty. Prepare for working outdoors in the hot weather some days or all days. If you have any work concerns or limitations, please discuss them with Amanda or Erin before the trip to ensure accommodations.
